Artists' Reception - Kavli Theater - Thousand Oaks, CA. On Sunday 29th August, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, there will be a free brunch for artists whose work is currently on display in the theater, and their friends. Feel free to come by and join the fun. I currently have 3 images hung in prime position on the Mezzanine Level of the theater - my Best In Show 'Smoke on Lit Water', the 'Carolina Wren in Snow at Dusk', and a high speed flash image of a female Rufous/Allen's hummingbird flying, and very, very close. Directions to the Kavli Theater can be found here.

My Hummingbird Photography Workshops are in full swing. We have already had quite a few sessions, with some outstanding results, and students seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, learning a lot, and capturing some great images! Take a look at the testimonials page for some student reaction. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or use the Contact Page.

July 2010 - 2 news items!

As a result of winning 'Best In Show' at the show I mentioned in the June news (below), I have been invited to partake in an exhibition being held at the Kavli Theater, Thousand Oaks Arts Plaza, from July to November. Three of my images will be hung in the foyer of the plaze, which is very prestigious - I am most grateful to the organizers.

My Hummingbird Photography Workshops will begin the week of July 26th, and I will have a blog at hummerpix.wordpress.com with more details. Please note that this blog will not be live until around July 20th.....

Hummingbird Photography Workshops

At last, they are actually going to take place! This season has had a very slow start for hummers, but as of the last couple of days, they are beginning to arrive in numbers. The incessant cold weather and unbelievable winds have retarded their arrival. I will probably have the first few sessions toward the end of June, then into July. I have many folks already signed up, but if you are interested in more details, drop me a line here, or use the Contact page.

October 2009

Gave a workshop on high speed flash this month. Lots of preparation, but lots of fun too. Take a look at www.TOPCC.org/photo (only during this month) to see a few pics from the gig. Balloons popping, water droplets splashing - that sort of thing. Demonstrated how to do HSF with standard gear, as well as some very exotic gear.....

September 2009

The local camera club had me out again, for their annual picnic. I was asked to talk and demonstrate, so chose the topic of 'Creativity'. I set the task to everyone there, to take an image of something mundane, and make it interesting. Different angle of view, slow shutter speed, whatever - think right outside the box. My judging was going to be purely on creativity, not on exposure, focus or anything technical. As such, (as hoped) I was presented with images taken from high end gear to cellphones.  Good fun had by all.

Also did some product shoots for www.charmingpetproducts.com

If you need anything done photographically, by the way, feel free to contact me here

August 2009

I recently gave a talk at a local camera club in Thousand Oaks California on macro photography with an emphasis on spiders. Seemed to go quite well. I am once more motivated to update this website, so will try to do so next week. I have been playing a little with high speed flash, air pistols and liquids - a fun, but messy combination.

Also, I spent a good deal of time measuring the output level and flash durations and differing power levels of many contemporary flashguns. This has produced rather a large spreadsheet, which I want to distill and post here.

Finally, I am thinking of running some hummingbird photo workshops using high speed flash - see the Events page for a few more details.

May 2009

Recent additions and edits have occurred in the hummingbird galleries, where they are separated into the species which visit my home in Southern California. Simply click on the hummingbird gallery to descend to the images.

I have also uploaded some spider pictures. These all come from my large uncataloged library of slide transparencies, and have been scanned using various equipment. As I do more of these, a lot of these images will be replaced. The spiders can be found in the Nature gallery.

April 2009

I have created a couple of blogs - a  Personal one and another devoted to High Speed Flash

The Contact page is available for anyone wishing to send any comments or questions - I welcome them!

Roy's Hummingbird Images were on display for most of 2008 at the Museum of Art, Hickory, NC. This was an exhibition on the work of Harold 'Doc' Edgerton and the photographers he inspired. Roy was very flattered to be asked to be part of this exhibition, and his high speed flash images of hummingbirds were very well received. See the Events  page for further details.

This website contains many of Roy's high speed flash photography images, and if you are interested in high speed flash equipment, or high speed flash techniques, feel free to click on the Techniques and Gear pulldown menu. Here you will find detailed description of many of the high speed flash systems that have been used by Roy and others over the years, including some very rare custom equipment.

November 2008 saw Roy in Ecuador photographing hummingbirds for the Center of Tropical Research, out of UCLA. He worked in the Choco Rainforest of NW Ecuador, regarded as one of the top 5 biodiversity areas on the planet. Some images of that expedition will be posted soon.
